Join other parents and Community Members and meet with the Administrative Staff at SCI in a relaxed environment. The meetings are held monthly in the SCI Library. All are welcome. If you have a topic of interest or would just like to meet and share ideas in a comfortable atmosphere, please come out. This is a great opportunity to learn about your child's school. SCI Advisory Council for School Leadership

Meeting Minutes for Monday, May 16, 2005

Location: SCI Library Time: 7:00 p.m.

3. Fall Leadership Conference Sept. 15-17: Information presented by Dawn Birch.

Items handed out include: Manitoba Student Leadership Conference 2005 Brochure, Tentative Advisor Schedule, Letter to PAC members re parent volunteer opportunities, Letter re student billeting.

Additional information:

· Sunrise Schoolboard has offered to help with signage and painting of gym

· Previous conference had an attendance of 240

4. Old Business

A) Communication Strategy Part II

Discussion about ideas from the document handed out at last month’s

meeting. Can information be distributed for a two month period? How do we

allow for changes or additions to the information? Need a good process for

collecting the information ( consistent person) and ensure all staff provide

adequate notification of any changes. Reminder that information may be

subject to change/ phone school or check website for changes. Also make

use of the Clipper for SCI news. Reminded that there will be a mailout for

August 15.

B) Bulllying Survey : Survey has been done for two years, should it be continued?

PAC would like to see it continued as a reference for comparison. Has the survey identified any need for interventions? How do school policies of the feeder schools affect entry of students into SCI?

C) Principal Report:

· Phys Ed/ Health SI and SII- will be looking at a combined health and phys ed mark.

· Also busy with registrations and doing time tabling for next year- courses with low enrollment will be cut.

· Building maintenance- plans for painting the gym, painting door frames, parking lot repairs and possible expansion. No specific maintenance budget- based on school need and requests put in annually.

· Network wiring, still committed for each classroom.

Principal Report con’t.

· Re staffing: projecting an increase of 1full time equivalent teacher, no increases in support staff

· Department Heads have been replaced with the name Team Leaders. The school is looking at way s to free them up from classroom in order to support their role and extra activities.

· Two teachers leaving at present: Mr. R. Mantie and Ms. C. Schoofs. New teacher L. Mc Ketchen starting in fall.

· Educ. Assist. Support 03/04 11.5 positions

04/05 7.17 positions

Two Educ. Assist. in the Tech Ed program.

D) Transcona Springfield Education Foundation: (TSEF) Gladys has been

tracking where the fund is at present : where is the money? How has the fund changed since amalgamation ? Information has been difficult to acquire – inquiries have been sent to Sunrise Admin. with no response to date. Gladys has council support to continue to pursue. Minutes of Sunrise School board meeting of Jan. 20/2005 provided. ( Motion # 04/05/01/20-0289: Be it resolved that the Board accept the funds from Transcona Springfield Education Foundation Inc. and approve the letter of Agreement motioned by Trustees Friesen and Nikodem). Gladys also provided a copy of the TSEF information from the River East Transcona School Division Website, including mission and purpose of the Fund – March 24, 2005).

E) Parent Forum Update: Draft letter to Sunrise PACS reviewed.

Motion to have SCI ACSL send letter to Trustee Borkowski inquiring as to why she voted against providing the SCI PAC with a location and refreshments for their April 30 forum.( School board minutes April 7, 2005 Motion # 04/05-04/07-0427).

D. Duma, C. Ammeter, Carried.

Action: Gladys and Doraine will complete letter.

F) MAPC Update: Gladys attended the MAPC AGM and Conference. Speaker

Jodee Blanco, Topic Bullying , was well received.

Motion 1 was passed, Motion 2 was passed, Motion 3 was defeated

An additional motion on nutrition in schools ( from St. Norbert) was passed.

( details will be forthcoming in the MAPC conference report).

G) School Cleanliness Tour: M. McGurran-Scott and D. Duma completed tour

and written report provided. Copy of report of May 16 was given to P. Ilchena but

tabled for discussion at next PAC giving time for it to be reviewed by Administration.

Motion to write letter to Sunrise Schoolboard requesting the immediate

removal of grafitti from exterior walls of SCI.

Action: Diane and Chairs will complete letter.

Gladys provided tabulation of information re: comparison of numbers of

cleaning staff in relation to school size , age of school , lot size and student

population. Chart attached.

5. New Business

A) PLACES -Parents Local Advisory Committee for Exceptional Students

Minutes of April 21, 2005 inaugural meeting provided. Attended by K. Carey

and D. Duma. Next meeting scheduled for May 30. Parents with questions,

ideas, concerns bring to Duma or Carey to bring forward. Will inquire about

posting minutes on SCI ACSL website.

B) PAC Elections – for 05-06 Council- The following names put forward:

Acclaimed: Gladys Hayward Williams, Doraine Wachniak, Ingrid Wasylenko, Nikki Bertrand, Diane Duma, Karen Carey.

Will post names on website and encourage parents to be on council.

6. Financial Report

Diane will send letter to R. Hardman requesting $125.00

Motion to reimburse D. Wachniak $64.26 for photocopying expenses for year

· March 31st, 2006 tentative date for school planning day.

· Vocational Report received by Sunrise Board in November 2004. Gladys will

continue to follow up on any actions that resulted from the report.

· Concern raised about article in the Man Teachers Society newsletter and article by B. Ardern making reference to “ parents
