Join other parents and Community Members and meet with the Administrative Staff at SCI in a relaxed environment. The meetings are held monthly in the SCI Library. All are welcome. If you have a topic of interest or would just like to meet and share ideas in a comfortable atmosphere, please come out. This is a great opportunity to learn about your child's school. SCI Advisory Council for School Leadership

Special Meeting Minutes for Monday, June 20, 2005

Location: SCI LIBRARY Time: 12:00- 2:45 p.m.

Attendance: Doraine Wachniak, Gladys Hayward Williams, Karen Carey, Nikki Bertrand, Marian McGurran Scott, Diane Duma, BJ Kuzmack

  1. Code of Conduct (i) Division’s draft code of conduct provided (ii) SCI draft provided

(iii) Response to Threats (divisional code) provided-

  • Discussion of the divisional draft code of conduct: Purpose of the document is for all stakeholders to be involved in its creation not just the editing. Items Pac felt were missing from document- inappropriate responses to inappropriate behaviour (conduct for staff), dress code on property, code regarding displays of physical intimacy (students).

PAC raised these immediate ideas but need time to consider document in length.

  • Comparative documents – Pembina Trails “Creating a Safe and Caring Schools Community” (distributed) and Education Manitoba May2005 newsletter were looked at.

Motion: to write letter to Sunrise Schoolboard re the inadequacy of process of parent and student involvement in the’ divisional code of Conduct” and the” response to threats” documents. Will also let them know that we will be asking the Minister of Education to clarify the role of parents in developing these documents.

  • Response to Threats document- does it contravene human rights legislation? Invasive questions. Protection of Privacy? Concerns about questionnaire and data collection. ( Document: When Words are not enough – from Education Manitoba Website – can be looked at)

Action: Marion will research through Ombudsman, etc issues raised above with the possibility of a letter to the Schoolboard with issues raised.

  1. Sunrise Vocational Review ( Committee Report to Sunrise Schoolboard and Board Motion provided)
  • Discussion about process of the Review and follow up. Impact on school populations and access to programs. Comment that at SCI - electronics course is held during e band ( 40 minutes) – not much can be accomplished.

Motion: to write letter to River East requesting whether a letter had ever been sent requesting vocational access from Sunrise

  1. Transcona- Springfield Education Fund

Information gathered:

  • Arms Length organization community board- formed in 1993 Volunteers of Community
  • Schoolboard member invited to sit on board
  • Board submits resport to schoolboard
  • Split of school division meant the split of TSEF fund and operating budget of which 1/3 was sent to Sunrise
  • Sunrise has created a Board of which the directors are 100% School board and Administration- no longer arms length. FACT sheet states established in 2001.
  • Foundation mission- to form partnerships with School Parent Councils. SCI ACSL has had no contact initiated from TSEF or New Sunrise Fund.

Discussion: Charitable Organizations Act must be followed.

Motion: due to lack of response from Sunrise Schoolboard, a Freedom of Information request will be submitted to follow up on paper trail of fund.

  • Follow up to Grafitti letter: grafitti on parking lot wall was cleaned within 3 days- looks better – other grafitti is still there .

  1. Parent Forum : report provided. No plans presently for follow up. For discussion in Fall.
  • Letter sent to trustee Borkowski provided. No response received.

  1. Fundraiser 2005: A Big Thank you to S.C.O.T.T.S Boat Safe for their $580.00 donation!!

7. Updates:

  • MERN ( Manitoba Education Research Network) one day Forum held on May 20 at the University of Winnipeg. Attended by D. Duma, G. Hayward Williams, K. Carey. We tried to cover many of the workshops and bring back shared knowledge. Many workshops done by Sunrise. Some would be interesting for PACs to see. Middle years and Literacy presentations were very well done. ( Middle years students, early years literacy, technology, board governance policy model…)

Concerns about one slide of the powerpoint presentation keynote address made by Sunrise Superintendent.

Concerns about board governance model by Schoolboard- where was the local public collaboration first?

PAC members may if they wish respond to these concerns individually.

  • SCI alternative health program: very good communication with school. Looking forward to a S2 course next year. Propose to develop a brochure. New teacher will be teaching the program next year. Try to get parents more involved.
  • SCI Communication strategy: to continue

8. Other: A big thank you to Doraine and Gladys for their tireless commitment, follow through on issues, and creating a very inclusive environment!!

FALL AGENDA ITEMS:

Tentative date for Next meeting September 22. Change meetings to try to accommodate other parents that were unable to attend on Mondays.
