Join other parents and Community Members and meet with the Administrative Staff at SCI in a relaxed environment. The meetings are held monthly in the SCI Library. All are welcome. If you have a topic of interest or would just like to meet and share ideas in a comfortable atmosphere, please come out. This is a great opportunity to learn about your child's school. February 29, 2016 Minutes


SCI PARENT ADVISORY COUNCIL FOR SCHOOL LEADERSHIP

MONDAY, FEBRUARY 29, 2016

SCI Library

In Attendance: Carolyn Whyte, Jodi Handoga, Shelley Jensen, Theresa Spapens, Jackie Julien, Tony Stanley

Regrets: Shawn Brook, Patricia McGregor, Maryn Whyte, Darcie Smith, Shari Steiner

1. Call to Order: 6:30 p.m.

2. Approval of Agenda: As there were only four voting members in attendance, there were not enough members to constitute a quorum. Without a quorum, no motions can be made and therefore, no motion was made to approve the agenda.

3. Guest Speaker: Marilyn Kolody, MAPC Representative: As Marilyn Kolody was unable to attend the meeting, Naomi Kruse, the Executive Director and Advocacy Project Coordinator. It was agreed to complete the other agenda items and then go back to Ms. Kruse’s presentation.

7. Principal’s Report: Jackie thanked the SCI PAC and parent community for the wonderful staff appreciation luncheon. She reported on Grade Wars taking place March 14-17, registration for next year, SCI Identity Project, the new Parent Portal and upcoming travel opportunities for students. A copy of the report is attached.

8. Treasurer’s Report: Balance in bank account is $652.39.

9. Correspondence:
  • Email received regarding MAPC Annual General Meeting and Conference on May 6 and 7, 2016.
10. Business Arising from Minutes:
  • Review Constitution – Carolyn suggested the review continue with Ms. Kolody after the formal meeting.
  • Teacher Appreciation Lunch – Carolyn provided a report. She thanked all the parents for their donations. The following is a financial summary:

  • MAPC Chairperson’s Breakfast – Carolyn had attended the breakfast and provided a report.

The meeting then returned to item 3, Ms. Kruse’s presentation.

There was a lengthy discussion on the role of PACs generally and how to get parents more engaged at the high school level. Some suggestions were:

Arrange presentations for Parent community on various topics, including:
- How to complete scholarship applications
- Information on post-secondary education alternatives to University
- Students presenting to parents on school activities (ie. Marine Science trip)
- Internet safety
- How to engage in your child’s education
-Safe workers of tomorrow
-Survey the Parent community to find out their interests.

The meeting then turned to a discussion of the Constitution and Ms. Kruse provided her input into some of the questions the Executive had. Carolyn will prepared a revised version of the Constitution.

Principal’s Report February 2016


1. Staff of SCI would like to thank our PAC and Parent community for the wonderful luncheon that was provided to all of us.

3. 2016 Registration process

Student registration guide is on-line, packages were sent home with students on February 22nd, 2016 and are to be returned to the T/A today February 29, 2016. Registration will occur during periods 1 & 2 March 7, 2016 with your child’s teacher advisor.

4. Staff and Students of SCI will be getting together for our second gathering around defining our identity on March 17th, 2016 at 1:00 p.m. If any parents or community members would like to join us, they are welcome.

5. Parent Portal

SCI is planning to open up the Maplewood Parent Portal as of March 11th. This will enable parents/guardians to see their child’s attendance and marks as often as they would like.

Student Council's Report January 2016

 In the past month, Student Council has worked on the following projects:

1. Christmas Grade Wars

2. SCI Movie Night

Christmas grade wars was a huge project and a major success. Everyone played a factor and the school felt united with a little friendly competition. This was where our focus was for the December weeks. The other project we worked on was the movie night, which unfortunately got cancelled due to bad weather. We had that packed and ready to go, but ended with disappointment. The students are looking forward to the coming months with many plans ahead.

Principal's Report January 2016

1.  Ethics Bowl in North Carolina – We have five students and two teachers who will be travelling to North Carolina to participate in the Ethics Bowl. Our team participated in the Manitoba event held on December 16, 2015 at the U of M and won. They will be the only team representing Canada in the 

2. Exam week starts this Friday, January 29, 2016.

3. Registration is going to start from 2016-2017.
  • Grade 9 – Parent Orientation the evening of February 23, 2016
  • Grade 10, 11 & 12 – Registration packages will be handed out on February 22, 2016
4. Louis Riel Arts & Technology
  • February 11, 2016 – presentation to students on programming offered
5. SCI first trailer raffle
  • Trailer was built by our Power Mechanics students
  • $675.00 was donated to Springfield Food Bank
6. Student Opportunities
  • Grade 11 & 12 students to U of M on February 18, 2016
  • Grade 11 & 12 students to U of W on February 17, 2016
